Dirt Cake Rice Krispie Treats

When it comes to food, I am a child. This morning I had chocolate milk and a single serving of chocolate cake in a mug. I told my daughter that both were “coffee”. Sugar is my addiction and desserts are my game. Here I’ve taken two very simple and fun desserts that I love and combined them. Dirt Cake plus Rice Krispie Treats! If I love these Dirt Cake Rice Krispie Treats I promise your kids will too.

Step 1: Make the Rice Krispie Treats

Spray a 9×13 pan with non-stick cooking spray.

In a large bowl, measure out 5 cups of Rice Krispies or a crisp rice cereal of your choice. If you really want to go for the “dirt” look use Cocoa Krispies.

Melt the butter in a medium-sized saucepan. Add the package of marshmallows and stir until the marshmallows have melted completely.

Pour the melted marshmallows into the bowl with the cereal and begin stirring together immediately. This will get sticky. You could spray your mixing spoon with non-stick cooking spray but then you wouldn’t get as much to lick off it at the end.

Pour the mixture into the pan. Press down until the cereal/marshmallow mix is even.

Tip: Spray wax paper with non-stick cooking spray and use it to pat down the Rice Krispie Treats.

Step 2: Frost

Frost the tops of the Rice Krispie Treats with the entire can of chocolate frosting. Use a rubber scraper to even out and smooth the frosting.

Step 3: Topping

Hopefully, you have a grocery store that keeps Oreo crumbs stocked for bakers like me. My grocery store doesn’t (boo!!).

Instead, I had to take the few extra seconds to count out 10 Oreo cookies and put them in the food processor to grind up.

Sprinkle the cookie crumbs (approx. 1 cup) on top of the frosting. You may want to press down on them a little so that the crumbs are secured.

Add as many candy worms as you want. I went with sour worms because that is my taste and I think the vibrant colors look better. Your children (or you) may prefer regular sweet gummy worms.

Done! That’s it. Simple, fast, and fun to make with kids. A great idea for a rainy, summer day. Maybe after making the treats the children can go outside and look for some real worms to go fishing with.
