I have been cloth diapering for over four years now (three babies) and I love it!! The benefits of cloth diapering are numerous but in this post, I want to share with you how awesome cloth wipes are. Plus, I include directions for my incredibly easy cloth wipe solution.
Why are cloth baby wipes so amazing? First of all, cloth wipes are better for the environment because they are reusable. Secondly, the cloth baby wipes work so much better at cleaning baby bums than disposable wipes. Plus, you can throw them in the same diaper pail as cloth diapers to be washed at the same time. Seriously, I can’t express enough how much I love my cloth wipes.
After doing a lot of research, I found the easiest way to make your own cloth wipes. See below for instructions;

Gather 15 of your clean cloth wipes. I have a total of 36 wipes because for six months I was cloth diapering both a baby and a toddler (until she was potty trained).
I like having dry cloth wipes ready to go whenever I need to make a fresh batch. I store them in the space between the changing pad and dresser topper (see picture below).
Add 1 teaspoon soap and two heaping tablespoons of coconut oil to a liquid measuring cup – 2 cups quantity or larger.
Heat two cups of water. I do this by bringing water in my teakettle to a boil and filling the liquid measuring cup up to the 2 cup mark. The hot water will melt the coconut oil which is what you are looking to do. Once the coconut oil has turned to liquid form stir together the ingredients in the measuring cup.
Please Note: My wipes are VERY HOT immediately after I make them. Please wait until your wipes have cooled down to an appropriate temperature before using on your baby.
Roll up five wipes and place them in a row in your wipe warmer. Pour approximately 1/3 of the solution over the wipes. Your goal is to try to get each cloth wipe damp. Make another row of five wipes and pour half of the remaining solution over the wipes. Finish with the last five wipes and pour the rest of the solution over the wipes.
Plug in your wipe warmer and you are good to go!
Please Note: I do not take my wipes out through the opening in the top of the wipe warmer. Instead, I just lift open the cover of the wipe warmer any time I need to take a wipe out.
Other Notes:
To summarize, I love using cloth wipes. The wipes are warm, durable, and with one wipe you can easily clean the dirtiest of bums. I hope you give them a shot, especially if you are choosing to cloth diaper.

Meghan, Thank you for your wonderful post. I would like to bring to your attention the issue of urine. Unfortunately urine is not sterile and promotes the breakdown of skin and other bodily tissue. All my best, Rachel
Thank you for bringing this to my attention Rachel. I was definitely misinformed. I will change my information about urine above right away. Thanks!
Hello, I was wondering for the soap can I use Tea Tree oil or Lavander as well? Or is that not recommended?
I personally have never added any extra oils to the cloth wipe solution but I know many people do. I have read that tea tree oil may be a little harsh on babies' skin for children under six months so you might want to keep that in mind.
What cloth do you use???
I just realized the brand of cloth wipes I use is currently unavailable on Amazon (because of high demand). I linked a brand I think seems very similar and has great ratings. You can click on the link above under Step 1 where I wrote: "Please Note". The highlighted "cloth baby wipes" will take you right to the page.
Does it have to be that soap? Or can it be baby soap?
Personally, I have only ever used Castille soap but baby soap should work just fine.
I don't have a warmer. Can I keep them sealed or will the coconut oil harden back?
As long as you keep the wipes in a sealed container they should be fine (the wipes just won't be warm, which is not a big deal at all). If the wipes are not used for a long time they can dry out (like if you go on vacation) so I wouldn't make batches of wipes in advance, just make one batch at a time.
