The health and safety category of your baby registry is one of the most important. You will be so happy that you registered for, or purchased, these items in advance of your baby arriving.
When your baby gets sick you will want everything on hand to help your child feel better. Your baby’s first fever is not the time you want to be running out to stores to buy medicine.
As far as baby proofing goes, most of the items could wait to be bought until the child starts crawling, but why not put the products on your baby registry to receive as gifts?

A wonderful baby item to register for is this health and grooming kit. In the kit you get a thermometer, nasal aspirator, nail clipper, comb, and so much more! I love that the case holds everything for easy access, we even store our baby’s medicines in the case so we don’t misplace them.
I would recommend getting disposable probe covers for your thermometer (I’m sure you can understand why).
Some people swear by the NoseFrida for a nasal aspirator but we’ve never needed it. Instead, for clogged noses, we use saline drops and they work great!
You feel so bad for your baby when he/she is teething and it seems like children are teething all the time. We tried a lot of different teethers but by far these are my daughter’s favorites;
You don’t want to wait until you take your baby to a loud parade, music festival, or fireworks before thinking about ear protection. Protect your sweet baby’s hearing with these infant earmuffs.
A humidifier will help your baby breathe especially when he/she is sick. We keep the humidifier in our daughter’s room at all times.
You will want to have Infant Tylenol on hand for when you will need it. Same with Infant Motrin – and yes you will want both kinds. Make sure to consult your pediatrician for correct dosing.
Gripe water isn’t essential but you may want to register for a bottle. I didn’t find that it helped with anything except stopping hiccups for our baby (it certainly didn’t help the colic!). That being said, babies get hiccups a lot so it is nice to have on hand.
Before I had a baby I didn’t know doctors want your baby to have a dose of Vitamin D every day. After our first pediatrician visit, I had to go out and buy some right away. It would have been nicer to have purchased it ahead of time.
We use this ointment almost every day on our daughter who has sensitive skin. Whether it’s for a rash or to put over small scrapes this ointment is the best!
Your child will seem to attract sick germs wherever you go. Shopping carts are especially gross – sticky and full of germs. Protect your little one with a shopping cart cover. Bonus – this cart cover has tons of storage, folds into a cute carrying case, and has a strap to keep sippy cups from falling.
Another great feature of the cart cover is that it has harness straps to keep your kid secured. So many shopping carts only have a lap belt that Cora has easily been able to escape and stand up on multiple occasions. Plus, a lot of the carts belts are broken.
To be honest, we just use a cheap wooden gate that we have in front of the stairs at all times. It is short enough to swing your legs over or you can easily lift up the bar to move the gate aside.
At my mom’s house when we come to visit she puts up a nice walk-through gate that is easy to open one-handed. Just make sure to measure correctly and keep in mind there is a small bar that goes across the bottom so don’t trip!!
You hear horror stories of children being killed by furniture tipping over on them. Please make sure to mount your furniture to the walls with furniture straps, especially if your child turns out to be a climber like ours.
Our television didn’t need to be strapped to the wall because it is up high enough that children can’t reach it. But a number of my friends use television straps so their kids don’t knock the t.v. off the entertainment stand.
We use a variety of different locks for child-proofing depending on how often we use the cabinet or drawer.
For example, we installed these magnetic locks on our bathroom drawers because the child is not able to open the drawer with the locks attached. You open the drawer with a magnetic key that we keep on the metal container that holds our toothbrushes. These locks make the drawers extremely safe and there is no drilling because you just stick the pieces on.
For our kitchen drawers and cabinets, we didn’t need them to be as secure and they get used more frequently throughout the day so magnetic locks would be inconvenient and unnecessary. My husband installed safety catches that are easy to hold down to get in and out of the drawers and cabinets. Yes, the drawers and cabinets open a little bit but not enough for the child to do any harm.
Next, on our pantry doors we have a sliding lock. If we didn’t have this lock our child would be helping herself to food constantly.
With our daughter, we learned we needed a toilet lock after I found my slippers floating in the toilet bowl one day. I don’t know anyone else that has one but for us this lock was an essential purchase.
Depending on how recently your house was built you may not need these but our house is older so we popped outlet plug covers in everywhere – even in our porch outlet! I also found it a good idea to bring along a bunch if you are going on vacation or staying over at someone else’s house.
There are a lot of blinds currently in our house and cords can obviously be very dangerous with babies so it is a good idea to keep the cords wrapped up safely. Honestly, I haven’t installed these yet because we have just been throwing the cords up over the curtain rod but we really should get them.
