Dealing with a child’s pee and poop will be a large part of a new parent’s life for a number of years.  Luckily, there are some great items on the market today to make the dreaded diaper change a lot easier.  Below are the items I use and highly recommend to add to the diapering category of your baby registry.

Diapers

The first decision a soon-to-be parent needs to make is what type of diaper to use on their infant’s bottom – disposable, cloth, or a mixture of the two.

Cloth

After much research, I decided to mostly use cloth diapers.  Cloth diapers cost less money in the long run, are better for the environment, and better for the baby.

That being said we still use disposable during travel and on our child overnight.  Cloth diapers definitely up your laundry game so if you hate doing laundry this may not be the best option for you.

After I chose cloth diapers I then had to select which type of cloth diaper to go register for (there are so many choices!).  Eventually, I picked the all-in-one cloth diaper because it seemed to be the least amount of work.  I am so happy I went with this choice, I love my cloth diapers!!  I have around 20 cloth diapers but plan to add a few more to my collection as we will soon have two in diapers.

Update: I have now cloth diapered three kids using the same cloth diapers and I still am extremely happy with my decision!

Worried about the large up-front costs with cloth diapering?  Have a diaper raffle at your baby shower.  Each guest who purchases one cloth diaper for you gets their name entered in a drawing for a prize.

If you are considering cloth diapering read more about it HERE.

Also, around six months old (or when your baby is eating solids) you will want to invest in a diaper sprayer that attaches to your toilet. Trust me! Or better yet, register for it now.

Disposable

Like I said above, we do still use disposable diapers. Going on vacation with cloth diapers is so not worth the hassle.

Furthermore, I register for a full box of newborn disposable diapers because meconium poops are the worst and you will be too exhausted to deal with laundry the first couple weeks.

If you are only going to use disposable diapers I would read this blogger’s post about the perfect diaper stock pile to register for.

Also, you should absolutely take advantage of savings with diaper subscriptions (click below)!

Wipes

Cloth

It wouldn’t make any sense to have disposable wipes if using cloth diapers because then you would need two different diaper pails.  I love my cloth wipes even more than my diapers!  The cloth wipes work so much better than disposable.  I only ever need to use one wipe per change with my cloth wipes.  Plus, the wipes are nice and warm from being stored in our wipe warmer.  Click here to see how I make my cloth wipe solution.

Disposable

In my diaper bag, I carry disposable wipes for when we’re out and about. I have tried multiple brands but by far I like Water Wipes the best.

Diaper Pail

This diaper pail works great for disposable or cloth.  I love that it has a locking feature as my child likes to throws toys in it if I don’t have it locked.  Smell has never been an issue with this pail.

We line our diaper pail with these cloth liners (I have two) and both the dirty diaper and wipe get thrown into the pail.  When ready to do laundry I remove the full liner and throw it all into the washing machine including the liner.

For the first two weeks with my newborn, I do put disposable liners in my diaper pail. I explained above why I don’t use cloth diapers the first couple of weeks after giving birth. If you are planning on using disposable diapers all the time you will want a lot of these liner refills.

Diaper Bag

I take my diaper bag everywhere.  In my diaper bag, I always have water, snacks, sunscreen, disposable wipes, disposable diapers, and a wet bag to store dirty cloth diapers or wet swimsuits.

Make sure the diaper bag you register for has multiple zippered pockets and easily clips onto a stroller handle.  Having the two mesh side pockets for bottles/sippy cups has been essential. I would also recommend choosing a diaper bag in a neutral color as your partner will be using and carrying it often.

Update: After our second child was born we switched to this backpack diaper bag. Chasing after toddlers is much easier when wearing a backpack diaper bag.

In my diaper bag, I also keep a pack of disposable diaper sacks to throw dirty disposable diapers in if I am not near a garbage can or if I am in a place where I don’t want to leave a nasty diaper.

Changing Station

For the nursery, you will want to buy a changing table or convert a dresser into a changing table (which is what I did).

I registered for a topper and changing pad to attach to a dresser we purchased for the nursery. This way in the future I can remove the topper and the dresser can be used for years to come!

Register for at least two changing pad covers. I always put one of these down over my changing pad covers to reduce how often I have to change them.  They are great for patting the bum dry after wiping plus they make great burp cloths!

Diaper Rash Cream

Last but certainly not least, you will need diaper cream at some point.  I choose not to use diaper rash cream with my cloth diapers because that could ruin them.  If my daughter ever has a rash I do use this cream but then put her in a disposable diaper. The container lasts forever and the cream works wonderfully!

    • Thanks for the recommendation! I will have to look into that brand of diaper rash cream. My baby has sensitive skin so when we use disposable diapers we sometimes do need to use rash cream.
