A number of the books I read this month don’t give away the whole plot at the beginning like so many usually do – I love this! Instead, the reader learns more and more as the story progresses. These are very popular books and will help you chat with friends and colleagues who have read them as well.  See below to check out what I read for March.

The Sea of Tranquility

I absolutely loved how The Sea of Tranquility is written. While reading you gradually find out more and more about the characters as the story continues. A teen is moving in with her aunt to have a fresh start at a new school. The catch is she doesn’t speak and has started dressing in all black with super high heels. Despite attempts to fade into the background she befriends two guys who bring her into their worlds – one a manwhore and the other an emancipated teen living on his own.

You learn what happened to make her stop talking and why she believes she is ruined forever. Even though the characters are in high school I was truly engrossed with this book. I think it would make an excellent book club pick.

The Clasp

I thought The Clasp was a weird one. The premise sounding exciting, the hunt for a famous necklace, unfortunatley the book was anything but. The story is unrealistic and the characters unrelatable.

In this book, college friends have grown apart and each is in a place where his/her job and relationships are not making the person happy. After a friend’s wedding the hunt for a famous necklace is enticing and leads some of the group to France. I thought the included short story about the necklace was interesting but overall the book was a huge letdown. Reading about mopey people in my limited free time isn’t for me.

One Day in December

In One Day in December two strangers see each other on a bus and fall in love at first sight. After a year of searching for the mystery man, the woman is about to give up when the two meet under less than ideal circumstances. A love triangle in which one person is completely unaware begins. Now that the two have found each other there is never the right time or right place to be together.

The book takes the reader through many years of the characters’ lives in which they have other relationships, change jobs, endure hardships, etc. Are they destined to be together or has the opportunity been lost after the initial sighting?

In my opinion, the book got better as it went on. I found myself enjoying it more and more especially since it covers such a significant amount of time in the characters’ lives.

The Wife Between Us

The Wife Between Us is something a little different than what I typically read but variety can be a good thing! There are a lot of twists in the story and as the reader there are times when you might be a little confused (at least I was).

A preschool teacher marries an older, wealthier man and moves to the suburbs where she feels very isolated. When struck with fertility issues the wife’s drinking starts to become a problem in their marriage. She also begins to fear that she is becoming crazy like her mother.

Much is slowly revealed as the book proceeds. I very much liked the ending and I’m typically not a huge psychological thriller fan but this story was a good one. Major themes in the story include how relationships can change over time and how some people put blinders on when it comes to love.
