Babies receive a ton of gifts when they are born but what about the mama! She is the one who had to deal with morning (all-day!) sickness, labor, and delivery. Moms who have just given birth deserve to be showered with presents. Especially because the next few weeks will be rough-going waking every couple of hours. Here are some great gift ideas for new moms.
New moms will be having a lot of interrupted sleep for the next few weeks/months/years. She will probably not be feeling the best about her current appearance. Bringing a new mom items to pamper herself will bring her a lot of joy.
I love a good eye cream, especially after giving birth. I’m exhausted and there are always bags under my eyes. But everyone wants to come and meet the new baby.
Undoubtedly, there will be pictures and the new mama will want to look less haggard than she probably feels. Dabbing on some eye cream might make her feel like a whole new woman.
For my last pregnancy, my aunt gave me a face mask as part of her thoughtful gift. A spa-like treatment you can do at home without leaving your newborn? Yes, please!
All new moms need dry shampoo. Why? Because a daily shower is not going to happen. Even when a new mom is able to get a shower the whole time she is going to hear phantom cries and might forget to wash her hair (been there, done that). Dry shampoo will make a new mama feel less like a slob kabob.
In my opinion, skip gifting nail polish, fancy hair tools, or makeup – those items are not happening any time soon in a new mom’s world.
A woman who has just had a baby is dealing with a lot of boob issues even if she is unable, or decides not, to breastfeed. Engorgement, leaking, size, etc. a lot is happening in the chest area. The following gift ideas are to help make a new mama’s life easier.
I absolutely love these sleep bras. For months following the birth of a baby, I wear one every single night. These bras are so comfortable and are great for holding nursing pads in place.
If you are feeling really generous give the mom at least two – I wish I had more. The bras come in different colors and if you are not sure what size to get, size up.
A woman’s body has just gone through hell and back giving birth. It is every woman’s dream for her body to snap back after pregnancy but that isn’t the typical case. Belly wraps/supportive underwear help support and compress the waist and hips after having a baby.
After my c-sections, a belly wrap made me feel so much better physically and made me have more confidence in my appearance.
I love being given nursing tops. A new mom is spending so much money on the new baby that she often overlooks her own needs. Nursing tops are so helpful, especially when you have guests stopping over all the time or you plan on nursing in public. My favorite nursing shirts are from Motherhood Maternity and Latched Mama, even Old Navy has some cute options.
My typical sleepwear consists of sweatpants and a baseball shirt – not sexy. Getting a nice pair of pajamas (that you can easily nurse in) will make a new mom feel more like a woman.
If you know the new mom is breastfeeding here are the supplies I was so happy to have that I didn’t purchase before I gave birth.

Breastfeeding moms are always hungry and never have time to make themselves food. Giving snacks that are easily digestible and can be eaten using one hand is very thoughtful. I favor these oatmeal bars because they increase my milk supply and are tasty.
Another favorite of mine is individual water flavor packets. I am not the best at drinking the amount of water I need every day. By adding flavor to my water I absolutely stay hydrated better.
A super fun gift to receive is one you get to open every month. Subscription boxes make excellent presents because you get to treat the new mama over and over again.
Here is one subscription box specifically for pregnancy and postpartum.
Have a ton of friends having babies but not a lot of extra cash? Offer up your services. Take their dog on a walk, cook a meal, mow the lawn for them – these gifts are priceless!

New moms definitely want a NAP! That's all I was desperate for when I gave birth to my twins!
Sleep is the ultimate need for new moms - I can't even imagine with twins!
I love the idea of a meal subscription! Meals are always so hard. I recently heard of someone receiving a 1 year subscription to InstaCart (grocery delivery service $99/year) for their baby shower. That's a similar idea that I also found genius!
I love InstaCart! That would be a perfect idea for a new mom, then she can pick her own groceries and get them delivered straight to her.
These gifts are such a great idea! I also tend to get my mom more pampering gifts because she never does for herself.
Smart thinking Sarah, I think most moms don't spend a lot of money on themselves but we sure love receiving indulgent items or services!
I love all these ideas for helping out new moms!
Thanks, sometimes the moms get overlooked when a baby is born but I think that is when moms need to be supported (and spoiled) the most!
This is such a great list of gifts for new moms! I really love the idea of easy to prepare meals to have on hand, a lifesaver in the first few weeks of bringing baby home.
Thanks Sharon, I hate meal planning but it's essential for my week to go smoothly so anything that makes that chore easier I am all for!
These are such great gift ideas! I feel like a lot of the time new moms get too much for baby and not enough for them! And moms go through huge changes after baby is born so a lot of these gifts would be amazing for them to feel rejuvenated and comfortable at the very least!
Agreed! The changes new moms go through in such a short amount of time is unbelievable.
