Declutter Challenge Week 8: Spring Home Decor

spring decor items

I am not a huge decorator. I think I have pretty good taste, but I struggle with spending money on items that are purely for decoration though I admire people who decorate their homes for each season. One of my goals is to start slowly picking out quality seasonal home decor pieces I love that I will use every single year. But before I add any seasonal home decor I need to first declutter that category! See my easy steps below to help with the decluttering process.

Step 1: Gather

This week we are focusing solely on spring home decor. Gather items around your home that only come out during the spring season.

For example, if you have throw pillows on your couch that stay there year-round don’t go through the decluttering steps with those pillows BUT if you have pillows you only use during the springtime then do gather those.

Step 2: Ask Questions

Once you’ve gathered your spring decorations. Ask the following questions for each piece to help you decide if it is something you want to keep or declutter.

Do I like it?

Is it cohesive with my other spring decor items?

When was the last time I displayed it?

Is it my style?

Does it add to the room/space?

Is it damaged?

How many __ do I really need?

Is it worth storing 3/4 of the year?

Step 3: Decide

After asking the questions, make piles for your spring home decorations. A keep pile, a donate pile, a sell pile, a trash/recycle pile, and a give away to friends/family pile.

Now is the perfect time of year to donate or sell spring home decor items because people are excited about the upcoming season and can’t wait for winter to be over (I know I am!).

I have a bunch of extra Easter baskets to list on our local “free/buy nothing” Facebook group.

Bonus Steps: Clean & Organize

If you have the time and inclination this week you may want to look over how your spring home decor items are being stored. Is there a better more efficient way to organize them? Does anything need repair or cleaning?

You might as well take the time this week while everything is out to organize and clean your items before you put them back in storage for a few more weeks. Or get your spring decor items out to display now if they bring you joy during these bleak February days (I live in Wisconsin).

I hope you join me next week for our next category of the Declutter Challenge!
