Children’s Books About Fall

I love curating collections of children’s books for my kids. Whether it is for a specific holiday, season, or activity, books can help us get excited about some upcoming time or event. Below you will find some of our favorite children’s picture books about fall. Celebrate the changing of the seasons and what autumn brings.

Too Many Pumpkins

An older woman grows many vegetables in her garden except for pumpkins because she had way too much pumpkin for every meal when she was a little girl. One day pumpkins get spilled into her yard and she tries to clean them up. Despite her efforts, tons of pumpkins end up growing in her yard. The woman ends up embracing her situation. She invites the whole town to come to enjoy the field of jack o’ lanterns she has carved and take home some pumpkin goodies she’s made.

I Know It’s Autumn

This book summarizes a few key aspects of fall that children can easily observe as the seasons change. From leaves being raked into piles to seeing jack o’ lanterns on front stoops, this book is a great way to start the fall season.

The Leaf Thief

A squirrel is very concerned when one of his leaves goes missing. He thinks another animal has stolen it. After trying to seek out the thief, he’s finally told that it’s the wind that steals his leaves and it happens every year. It’s a very cute, simple story.

Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie

My kids don’t always understand all the confusion Amelia Bedelia faces with verbal expressions but they love these books all the same.

In this story, Amelia and her granddad go to buy apples because her grandma wants to make an apple pie. I love how the book includes the pictures and names of numerous types of apples (ones I have never even heard of!).

Amelia assists her grandma in baking the pie but typical shenanigans ensue with Amelia saving the day.

*A recipe for apple pie is included in the back of the book.

Apples, Apples, Apples

A bunny family heads to the orchard to pick apples. The farmer teaches them facts about apples during their fun outing.

*An applesauce recipe is included.

Mouse’s First Fall

A board book for your youngest readers. Two mice head outside to play in leaves of all different colors, shapes, and sizes.

Arthur Jumps Into Fall

Arthur is a favorite character of ours. In this book, Arthur is supposed to rake up all the leaves in his backyard. But it’s a lot more fun to jump into the leaves than to rake them. In the end, his friends help him finish his chore.

Apples and Pumpkins

A little girl heads to a farm with her parents to pick apples and pumpkins. At home, they carve the pumpkin and then go trick-or-treating. It’s a simple and sweet read about fall.

Leaves

A young bear experiences his first autumn. He doesn’t understand why the leaves are falling off the trees and he tries to reattach them.

Eventually, he gets tired and settles in for a long nap. When he wakes it is springtime and new leaves have grown.
