St. Patrick’s Day Children’s Books

I love to celebrate holidays with my children. St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most fun holidays to celebrate because there is no stress associated with it (no gift buying, no traveling, etc). We love to make a leprechaun trap, dress in green, and make fun mint-flavored treats. As with every holiday, we also read a lot of books. Here are some of our favorite St. Patrick’s Day children’s books.

Fiona’s Luck

This is probably our favorite book on the list. When humans came to Ireland they started to get too much of the luck. The leprechauns gather it up and the Irish begin to have bad fortune (little to eat, cows won’t produce milk, etc). A local girl, Fiona, uses her wits to trick the leprechauns into sharing the luck again. It’s a very cute story about a smart and resourceful young woman.

The Itsy Bitsy Leprechaun

This is a short board book for babies or young toddlers that can be read or sung to the tune of Itsy Bitsy Spider. It features gold, rainbows, and luck.

The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day

A brother and sister decorate for St. Patrick’s day and set out traps to catch a leprechaun. The leprechaun makes a mess around their home. The siblings do catch a leprechaun and he tells them where to find his pot of gold. Obviously, the leprechaun tricks them. It’s a fun book, perfect if you are going to make a trap.

The Story of the Leprecahun

This book starts with an author’s note about leprechauns which is helpful for kids to understand. It also explains why the gold is hidden at the end of a rainbow.

A man tries to trick a leprechaun in order to get the leprechaun’s pot of gold. But when granting the man his three wishes the leprechaun, in turn, tricks him.

I love that the book includes a map of the village and adorable illustrations of leprechauns living in tree trunks.

It’s St. Patrick’s Day

An easy reader with only one or two simple sentences on each page. The book goes over the basics of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day (wearing green, eating Irish stew, Irish dancing, Irish music, etc)

The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever

A large leprechaun family celebrates St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green, attending a parade, and getting together with friends for a feast.

Lucky Tucker

Tucker is a dog who has a rough start to his morning until he rolls in a patch of clover then everything goes his way! This book comes in a board book version for your littlest kids.

That’s What Leprechauns Do

Three leprechauns have to dig up a pot of gold before the rainbow comes. But along the way, the trio first causes a little mischief.

The Leprechaun Under the Bed

A leprechaun tries to scare off a human who has built a house over the leprechaun’s underground home. But the man is not frightened and instead the two form a friendship.

The Luckiest Leprechaun

A leprechaun assumes all humans are after his gold and is not amused when a dog takes a liking to him. It’s a cute story about friendship.

The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun Loose at School

This book is similar to the other books in this series. A leprechaun is causing mischief all over the school and the gingerbread man is determined to catch him and sets up a trap. Once the leprechaun is caught the gingerbread man wishes for the messes to be cleaned up. It’s a cute and enjoyable story my kid love.

The Leprechaun’s Gold

An old man plays the harp for local weddings and charges only a little. He teaches a young man how to play the harp but the young man is greedy. A contest to play harp for the king is announced. Both men travel together to the contest. At night when they hear a cry for help the old man assists a leprechaun who returns the favor by giving the man a lovely harp to play for the contest. The young man who didn’t help consequence during the contest.

A Fine St. Patrick’s Day

Two towns compete every year for the award of most festive on St. Patrick’s day. One town always wins. A young girl has an idea to paint the whole town green. A stranger is in need of help. In the town that always wins no one will help him because they are too busy decorating. The other town all comes out to help even though they won’t finish painting in time. The next morning the townspeople wake up to see their whole town has been painted and they win!
