How to Update Your Clothing for Spring and Summer

I’ll be the first to admit it, I am not a trendy person. The last five summers I have either been pregnant or breastfeeding so I only cared about clothes that fit my body and were easy to nurse in. For this spring and summer, I am wanting to update my clothing to be a little more fashionable. Below is my helpful process to update your clothes for spring and summer (including a FREE printable!).

Step 1: Determine How You’ll Be Spending Your Spring and Summer

Hoping to spend more time on boats this summer.

I am currently a stay-at-home mom to two toddlers. This spring and summer I plan on spending a lot of time at playgrounds and the beach. I need clothing that is comfortable, easy to move in, casual, yet still cute.

Do you have travel plans coming up? Will you be attending a number of formal events? Is your office freezing but do you take lunch breaks in the park?

You should start determining your clothing needs based on what daily life will be like for you during the spring and summer seasons. But don’t forget any specific holidays, travel, and special events!

A few accessories can totally change the look of an outfit

Step 2: Evaluate Your Current Clothing

Shop your own closet first! Take inventory of what you already have that will work for this spring and summer.

You may want to try clothes on. I’ve fluctuated in size a lot recently. When taking inventory of my clothing a few pairs of shorts fell right off me while a few dresses rode up way too high.

Are you finding you gravitate towards certain colors or styles and you need to add in a little variety? My closet was full of stripes and black – I need some color in my clothing!

To make evaluating your wardrobe easier I’ve created a FREE PRINTABLE for you!

After you download the free printable go through your closet checking off what you need and what you don’t. In the “notes” sections I like to write what colors I should focus on. Also, I write down if I’m in need of solids, patterns, certain fabrics, etc. Remember you are trying to make outfits out of all your clothing items!

Polka dots on top of polka dots does NOT work. I need more summer shirts.

Step 3: Fill In The Gaps

After looking through your current spring and summer clothing inventory it should be clear your needs to fill in your wardrobe gaps.

Now it is time to go shopping!

Tips for saving money when clothes shopping;

  • Thrift – Try your local thrift and consignment stores or online (example: Thred Up). Give yourself a budget for your spring and summer clothing and make a game out of it.

  • Hand-Me-Downs (or ups in my case – ha, thanks sis!)/Borrow/Trade – Do you have a friend or sibling who is a similar size? Shop each other’s wardrobe to find new pieces.
  • Cash Back/Coupons/Promo Codes/Sales – You can save a lot by shopping sales, using coupons, and promo codes. Plan out your shopping to take advantage of money savings. I also use Rakuten for free cash back!

But what if you hate shopping?

Well, technology is grand and there are a ton of services that will shop for you and send clothing right to your house to try on.

I’ve personally used Stitch Fix a lot. It’s a fun process and you can avoid the nightmare of going to stores.

Another styling service to consider is Personal Shopper by Prime Wardrobe!  This service is available exclusively to Prime Members, click on the banner directly below.

However you decide to shop, I hope my system for updating your clothing for spring and summer has helped, especially my clothing inventory printable.

What is the clothing trend you are excited about for spring and summer? I would love to know, tell me in the comment section below.
