Gem Birthday Party

My daughter is obsessed with gems and has been for a long time. This year she requested to have a birthday party at home with some friends with a gemstones theme. Below you’ll find gem birthday party inspiration for invitations, activities, cake, favors, and more.

Invitations

For every birthday I use Canva to quickly design or use a provided template to create birthday invitations. Then I print the invitations out on photo paper.

Decorations

I am making a concerted effort to create less waste when throwing birthday parties. You are not going to see elaborate balloon arches from me.

From Dollar Tree, I purchased a simple gold “Happy Birthday” banner, a bag of jewel-toned balloons, and cups in pink, teal, and purple. I also purchased shiny gold tablecloths.

The only item I purchased from Amazon was these sparkly gem plates.

Activities

Gem Art

My two oldest have loved gem art for a long time. I knew this would make a great activity at the birthday party. Each kid got to pick one or more designs to work on. I put the gems on trays and labeled each tray. The party guests passed around the trays as needed for their selected designs.

To keep the mess contained, you may want to give each kid a plate to do their work on.

Tip: Have a tray for each diamond color. For each party guest, have a pen and a clay square. You can order more separately.

Gemstone Dig

I picked up two of these Crystal Mining Kits from our local gem store and the owner gave me the best tip. She said to soak the brick in water overnight so it’s easier for the kids to dig into during the party.

While most of the party guests were working on their gem art designs, I had two kids mining for gems (each with a brick on a separate tray). I allowed each child to find up to two gems before it was someone else’s turn.

Scavenger Hunt

The kids at the gem birthday party LOVED the scavenger hunt so much that they asked to do it twice (I said no).

Before the party, I hid clues (from this indoor treasure hunt) all around the house. I made four colors (teams) of clues. The clues were mostly hidden in different places but places that had multiple groups going to them were in a different order.

I numbered the clues and told the groups that they had to find all 10 clues (in order) to get the prize. It wasn’t a contest. As long as your group found all of your clues you would find your prize (one per person) at the very last clue.

Cake

For the birthday cake, I tried a marble glaze for the first time. I think it was successful, but if I were to make it again, I would make sure the buttercream underneath was thicker and smoother on the sides before pouring the glaze.

I used this Mirror Glaze Recipe over this Rainbow Sprinkle Funfetti Cake. To complete the cake decoration I stuck five rock candy sticks (taking the ball off the end) into the cake. I purchased the candy from a local downtown toy store so my flavor/color options were limited to what they had available the day we went shopping.

Favors

When the kids first entered the birthday party, they were able to decorate their favor bags with gem and jewel stickers.

Then each child also used the stickers to decorate a picture frame. Every attendee took a picture with the birthday girl using her Instax Mini camera and slid the picture right into the picture frame to put into his/her favor bags to take home.

After decorating the favor bags, kids were able to add Pop Rocks, Ring Pops, gemstone stickers (from a local gem store), their completed gem art designs, and their prizes from the activities discussed above.

In summary, the gem birthday party was an easy and inexpensive theme. The kids loved it and I would absolutely do it again.
