Farm Themed Birthday Party

My daughter just turned two and we celebrated with a farm-themed birthday party. We picked a farm theme because she loves playing with her animal figurines every day (see “Gifts” section below). Plus, a farm theme is easy and perfect for young children!

Invitations

Food

Another great aspect of a farm theme is that the food can be super simple. No one expects gourmet food at a two-year-old’s party, especially one that is farm-themed.

Just remember to set out all the food you prepare. #MomFail – I made this macaroni and cheese recipe the day prior to the party so I would only need to bake it in the oven right before it was time to eat and I completely forgot about it. We were eating mac and cheese for days once I realized my error after all the guests had left.

Depending on the time of year will help you select your menu. I would have loved to have served corn on the cob and watermelon but since our party was in March those foods were not happening.

Here are some food ideas for a farm party;

Dessert

The birthday cake was in the shape of a pig’s face. We decided on a pig because it is an animal easily identifiable by our daughter and I only had to make one frosting color.

Here are the instructions for how to make your own pig cake. It is surprisingly easy!

We also had ingredients for root beer floats because not everyone loves cake but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like a root beer float.

Decor

I am not a person who goes all out with decor for a birthday party. Number one, I’m cheap. Number two, a toddler isn’t going to appreciate the time or energy put into decorations. A few simple items are all you need;

Cow Banner

Tablecloth

Napkins/Straws/Plates/Cups

Bandanas – I used bandanas to line baskets and trays of food and also used them as photo props (see below).

Buckets for Drinks

Hay Bales – Depending on where you live hay bales might be easy to attain.

Cow Balloons – You can make your own with a sharpie and white balloons but I’ll warn you it takes forever.

Activities

There are many factors to consider when selecting the activities to have at the party. First of all, you need to consider the age of the birthday person as well as the invited guests.

Unfortunately, since we were hosting our daughter’s birthday inside at our house we were only able to invite a few people – none of which were children.

If children had been able to attend I would have gone all out with the activities so the kids could have a really good time.

Other factors to consider when choosing what to do at the party; weather, time of year, cost, supplies, etc.

Here are my suggestions to consider for farm-related party entertainment:

   

Petting Farm

Obviously, the first activity that comes to mind is having the party at a petting farm or bringing a petting farm to you. Depending on where you live this could potentially cost a lot of money.

My daughter would have loved to have spent her birthday petting and feeding farm animals but March is too unpredictable where we live to make a petting farm the main attraction of a two-year-old’s birthday party.

   

Barn Backdrop with Farm-Themed Photo Props

Something we were able to do inside that all ages could participate in is a cheap and easy barn backdrop with photo props.

• Buy 2 red poster boards, 1 roll of black electrical tape and 1 roll of white duct tape.

• On 1 red poster board trace out barns doors then put white tape over your pencil lines to create the bottom portion of the barn.

• On the second poster board trace the barn roof and cover with black electrical tape.

• Next, create the barn window by layering black electrical tape to form a rectangle and outlining the shape in the white duct tape. If you have a piece of yellow paper you can cut it to make the appearance of hay coming out of the window.

• Finally, tape your two pieces of red poster board together and you have created a barn backdrop for under $5 (or free if you already have the supplies!).

Egg Races

Balancing eggs on spoons doesn’t just have to be for Easter fun. This simple (and cheap) activity can provide a ton of entertainment that fits the farm theme perfectly.

   

Musical Chairs

Another easy game to play with kids is musical chairs – if you have enough small chairs for the kids to sit on. To make the game fit the party theme play farm-related songs; “Old MacDonald Had a Farm”, “The Farmer in the Dell”, etc.

   

Face Paint

If you have someone talented enough (or hire someone) to paint kids’ faces this is usually a big win for any birthday party. To make the activity farm-related have options printed out for the kids to choose from (a pig, a bunny, a horse, etc).

Remember, it might be easier to paint someplace other than a child’s face. The hand, arm, or cheek might be better suggestions for some kids depending on their age and patience level.

   

Fishing for Ducks

You might think, “What a boring game that kids won’t care about.” You’re wrong. My child would have played this over and over and over. In fact, she did, even pushing other children out of her way to continue scooping rubber ducks out of the water with a small fish net. Sometimes the easiest activities to prepare end up being the most fun.

   

Craft(s)

Children like crafts, I don’t. I think crafts end up involving a lot of supplies and preparation for very little time actually used up at a party. But maybe the children at your party will be a little older.

Try making a sheep mask or cow headband to stick with the party’s theme.

   

Pin the Tail

Pin the Tail has always been a popular birthday party game. The animal doesn’t have to be a donkey. You could have pin the tail on the pig, horse, or cow.

   

Sack Races

If you are able to go outside for the party I would highly recommend planning potato sack races. That is if the children (and adults) are physically capable of partaking in this type of race.

   

Corn Sensory Bin

Sensory bins are delightful for babies and young toddlers. Fill a large container with corn kernels and hide various objects inside. For example, farm animal figures, toy tractors, small buckets – kids really like to pour the corn. You will be surprised how long a sensory bin can keep a child entertained.

   

Horse Races

Super cute to watch, children riding horse sticks around is perfect for a farm-themed party.
