Declutter Challenge Week 6: Audio and Visual Entertainment

Depending on what your family members like to do in their free time this category might be a lot to go through or not much at all. We fall into the latter category especially since we don’t play video games. But even we definitely have old music players and DVDs that we don’t watch that can be decluttered from our house. Use the easy system below to help you declutter your visual and audio entertainment items.

Step 1: Gather

For this week, I would recommend sticking to one category at a time in order to not get overwhelmed. You may even want to spread this week’s goal out over the next seven days and focus on one particular item each day. For example, go through all your family’s DVDs on Wednesday, music players on Thursday, etc.

I would recommend involving the other members of your family this week. You might not know exactly what games are played with often or what items are worth a lot of money and should be sold instead of donated.

Tip: You don’t need to declutter any computers or phones this week. That category will come later in this Challenge.

Step 2: Ask Questions

Once you’ve gathered your items ask the following questions to determine if it should be kept or decluttered from your house.

Do I like it?

Will I ever watch/play it again?

Do we have a player for the format?

Why am I keeping this?

Do we have a more updated version?

Is it damaged?

Does it work?

Are there duplicates?

When is the last time I watched/listened/used it?

Is there a better way to save/store it?

If I decluttered this item and ended up regretting my decision could I easily get another one?

Step 3: Decide

Once you have made your decision, sort the items you are ready to declutter into categories (donate, give away, sell, trash, or digitalize).

This might be a great category to make some money on. If you are decluttering a number of your children’s items maybe put the funds you make into their college savings! Another option would be to let them do whatever they want with the money – they might choose to declutter a lot more items if there is a cash incentive!

If you still enjoy an item but the format is out of date digitalize it! You’re more likely to play a song or watch a video if you have a way to easily listen to it or watch it.
