Declutter Challenge Week 5: Furniture and Rugs

When people think of clutter, furniture is probably one category that doesn’t often come to mind but you may have a bit more to declutter than you realize. Sometimes we hold onto furniture because of how long we have owned it even if we no longer have a good use for it. Use the easy steps below to declutter furniture and rugs this week.

Step 1: Gather

I don’t expect you to gather all your furniture in a pile. Instead, this week go room by room and really take a look at each piece when asking the questions below. Make sure to check through your basement storage area(s) as well.

Also, do you have any furniture stored in other locations? Perhaps you rent a separate storage unit that has accumulated some of your furniture over time.

Our old rug (right) really darkened the living room in our new house. The new rug (left) looks so much better.

Step 2: Ask Questions

When looking at each piece of furniture ask yourself the following questions;

Do I like it?

Do we use it?

Does it provide value to the space?

Does it fit our style and other current decor?

Is it damaged?

Will we ever use it again? (For example, are you done having babies?)

Step 3: Decide

Furniture can be a large expense. Maybe you are ready to declutter something but it isn’t in the budget to buy a replacement yet. In this case, don’t get rid of the piece of furniture just yet. Instead, make a list of all the new furniture you want to buy, prioritize what items you would most like to replace first, and watch for sales.

Tip: Buying used can save you a ton of money! We have bought great brands and furniture that looks new for a fraction of the price off of Facebook Marketplace.

Bonus Steps: Clean & Organize

This week you probably aren’t getting rid of a ton of stuff. Take the extra time to deep clean your furniture and rugs.

You can also freshen up your decor with new paint and/or hardware. Switch out throw pillows for a new look. Even just rearranging your furniture in a room can totally change the look and feel.

I hope you join me next week for our next category of the Declutter Challenge!
