Children’s Books About Preschool

Last year before my daughter started preschool I wanted to prepare her as much as possible for the transition. I knew she would be nervous and I think the more you read about what to expect for any situation the better. Together we read through a bunch of children’s books about preschool to help prepare her.

Unfortunately, I found a number of books focused on the child being incredibly distraught about attending. Also, some books featured a lot of negative behaviors children shouldn’t do at preschool. That is not how I wanted the topic of preschool approached with my young daughter. I wanted to find books that described preschool in fun ways and that gave examples of positive behaviors students should display.

Here are the children’s books about preschool we really enjoyed reading together;

Ready, Set, Preschool is a great book to read with your child because it addresses both the social aspect of school and some of the subjects students will be learning (numbers, shapes, colors, etc). Plus, it has advice for parents on how to help their children with the transition to preschool.

My daughter loves The 12 Days of Preschool and I don’t mind singing. If this song will drive you crazy you might want to skip this book. To the tune of “The 12 Days of Christmas”, each day features one new element of preschool. For example, the reader sings “five dinosaurs” instead of “five golden rings”. The book doesn’t go in-depth about preschool but it features many of the activities students most likely will get to do at school.

The show and book series “Arthur” is a big hit in our house. DW’s Guide to Preschool features Arthur’s little sister going to preschool. She walks kids through the day and explains why she doesn’t cry at drop-off. The book adds a little comedy that young children will enjoy.

Another series my kids can’t get enough of! In Berenstain Bears Go to School Sister Bear is worried about what school will be like but after attending she has a wonderful time. Although not specific to preschool, this story does a great job addressing common fears about school.

Rosie Goes to Preschool is definitely geared towards younger children. I like the book because the character shows everything a new preschool student should expect in the classroom. From cubbies to the reading circle, the main concepts of preschool are introduced. Also, “Rosie’s Tips” throughout the story are cute and helpful.

In The School Book, the author goes over a number of different scenarios that can happen during school. It’s a positive book that features topics such as sharing and inclusion.

Lola Goes to School is the most recent book we’ve read and I think it might be my favorite. I especially like how the book shows Lola preparing for school the night before. It keeps everything about preschool simple enough for readers to understand and showcases going to preschool in a very positive light.

The Maisy books always do a great job of simply summarizing an activity for young kids. In Maisy Goes to Preschool, Maisy hangs her coat on a special peg with her name on it, the students paint, and there’s snack time. There are just a few short sentences on each page.

 

Again, we read a lot more children’s books about preschool but I didn’t think some of them did a great job of getting a child excited to begin going to school. If I find more children’s preschool books with positive messages I’ll be sure to update this post!
